Why Malaysia’s Next Business Leaders Won’t Be Bigger Companies. They’ll Be Category Creators

Phoenix Design Expands into West Malaysia to Help SMEs Move Beyond Price Competition and Build New Market Categories

PETALING JAYA, MALAYSIA – As competition intensifies across Southeast Asia, the businesses most likely to lead the next decade may not be the largest companies, but those capable of creating entirely new market categories.

That is the premise behind Phoenix Design Pte. Ltd.’s expansion into West Malaysia. The Singapore-based strategic branding and marketing consultancy has established a presence in Petaling Jaya to support Malaysian businesses seeking to differentiate themselves, strengthen their market position, and accelerate regional growth.

The expansion comes as many businesses across food services, retail, manufacturing, education, and consumer products face increasing pressure from commoditisation, rising customer acquisition costs, and shrinking margins. While many organisations continue to compete on price, Phoenix Design believes sustainable growth comes from becoming known for something uniquely valuable.

At the centre of its approach is the Category Hack Blueprint™, a strategic framework designed to help businesses identify untapped opportunities, define distinctive market positions, and create demand beyond traditional industry boundaries.

“Malaysia is home to some of the region’s most resilient and entrepreneurial businesses. Yet many are competing in crowded markets where products and services increasingly look alike,” said Herry Ho, Founder and Managing Director of Phoenix Design.

“The challenge isn’t a lack of quality or ambition. The challenge is differentiation. Businesses that continue competing on price will always face pressure on margins. Businesses that create a category of their own gain the opportunity to lead conversations, shape customer expectations, and command stronger market positions.”

Founded in Singapore, Phoenix Design works with SMEs, institutions, and multinational organisations across sectors including education, healthcare, manufacturing, professional services, and consumer industries. The firm specialises in strategic branding, category creation, customer experience design, and business growth strategy.

As part of its Malaysia expansion, Phoenix Design plans to establish strategic partnerships with local business communities, industry associations, and professional networks, while exploring opportunities to develop local talent and capabilities in the branding and business strategy space.

Rather than positioning itself as an external consultant entering the market, Phoenix Design aims to work alongside Malaysian businesses to unlock new growth opportunities both locally and across ASEAN.

“We believe the next generation of business leaders will not necessarily be the companies with the biggest budgets or the largest teams,” Ho added.

“They will be the organisations that identify emerging customer needs, create meaningful value, and build distinctive market positions that others cannot easily replicate. Our vision is to help more Malaysian businesses become category creators, strengthen their competitiveness, and build stronger pathways for cross-border growth between Malaysia, Singapore, and the wider ASEAN region.”

The company’s expansion reflects a broader commitment to supporting Southeast Asian businesses as they navigate digital transformation, evolving consumer behaviour, and increasing regional opportunities.
